Dr. Subrata Karmakar has won the prestigious “Outstanding Researcher Award in Physical Sciences” under the Researchers Category (Research/ Review Article/ Case Studies Authors) in the flagship Asia’s Science, Technology, and Research Awards (ASTRA 2023). Dr. Subrata Karmakar is currently working as a post-doctoral research associate at one of the leading universities in Texas, Texas State University, USA. He is from a small village in Purba Bardhhaman, West Bengal, India, and is 31 years old. He did his bachelor’s B.Sc. (H) from Chandernagore Govt. College, under Burdwan University with 1st class in 2012. Then, he completed his M.Sc. in physics from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar in 2015 with an M.Sc. thesis titled “Synthesis and Characterization of BSA-protected Gold Nanocluster: Structural, Optical, Electronic and Mechanical Properties” under Dr. Satchidananada Rath. He completed his Ph.D. in condensed matter and materials physics from the National Institute of Technology, Rourkela in 2022 with a CGPA above 8.5. He has published more than 39 papers (source google scholar) in his Ph.D. and postdocs with more than 25 papers as a first author in high-impact factors journals. He has presented papers at the International Conference on Magnetic Materials and Applications (ICMAGMA – 2018), NISER Bhubaneswar, and the International Conference on Processing and Characterization of Materials (ICPCM-2017), NIR Rourkela, As a speaker. He also presented posters at the International Conference on advanced materials (ICAM -2018), Kerela, and gave a talk at National Seminar On Recent Development in Energy Harvesting And Storage Materials, Panposh Govt. Autonomous College, Rourkela. His Ph.D. dissertation title was “Development of Nickel-Based Hybrid Metal Oxide Nanocomposites Electrode for Advanced Electrochemical Supercapacitor and Electric Field Emission Application” and he has worked in various fields on condensed matter and materials physics. His research area is Dielectric, Ferroelectrics, Multiferroics, Supercapacitor, Electric field emission, High-Pressure Study, Magnetic study, DFT, Optical study (Absorbance, Luminance), Gold Clusters study, (Bulk, nanomaterials, nanoclusters, Thick film,), etc. Currently, he is working on various aspects of newly discovered Q-carbon, diamond, and oxide thin film. He employs a range of traditional and progressive methodologies in research and teaching with an emphasis on field and experiential learning opportunities whenever possible. He regularly builds upon my theoretical and practical knowledge through research and by attending professional workshops, conferences, and courses. The area of Q-carbon thin film is very new, and they are probably the 2nd group in the world working in the Q-carbon area. Recently, they published an excellent work on the electrochemical performance of Q-carbon in ACS applied materials and interfaces. In this paper, we have successfully grown different structures of newly discovered Q-carbon thin film by PLD and PLA processes. The nanosecond pulsed laser annealing of PLD-grown amorphous DLC generates the liquid state of carbon, which undergoes a significantly undercooled state and subsequent ultrafast quenching at room temperature to form the Q-carbon thin films with nano-and microstructures. There are several papers on electrochemical supercapacitors of ACs, CNT, graphene, etc. but this is the first paper on electrochemical supercapacitors of Q-carbon. Additionally, it is difficult to comprehend the mechanism of ferromagnetism in carbon-based materials since they have just s and p electrons, as opposed to typical ferromagnets that have 3d or 4f electrons and we successfully got ferromagnetism in Q-carbon after PLA treatment.
He has qualified for various national-level exams in India i.e., CSIR NET (JRF), CSIR NET (LS), GATE, JAM, etc. Recently, he has ranked in the world scientist and university ranking (AD scientific index) in 2023 for his outstanding research contribution. He has also membership in the American Chemical Society (ACS) and served as review editor for Diamond and Diamond-Like Carbon, Frontiers in Carbon. He also served reviewer in various reputed journals ACS Omega, Physica-B, Journal of Physics and Chemistry of Solids, Ceramics International, Applied Physics A, Physics status solidi a, Journal of Alloys and Compounds, Journal of applied physics, etc.
