Magnificent news, “Dr. Anupam Dhasmana, Ph.D.” has won the prestigious award title “Asia’s
Outstanding Researcher Award in Systems Biology” of ASTRA 2023 under the Scientist
category.
Dear friends, I am Dr. Anupam Dhasmana, Assistant Scientist, Dept. of Immunology and
Microbiology, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. As per my education background, I did B.
Pharmacy, M. Tech, and Ph.D. in Biotechnology from UPTU and Integral University, Lucknow,
India. My Ph.D. research topic was to reveal the scavenging potential of nanoparticles from
biological systems. I have analyzed the scavenging capacity of nanoparticles against xenobiotics
like Benzo alpha Pyrene, NNK etc. The whole study was based on the statement of father of
toxicology Paracelsus, “Dose make the poison”. I had used very small dose of nanoparticles
(TiO2NP, CNTs) in cellular system to scavenge the toxicants. Interestingly, I observed effective
protective response of nanoparticles in cellular system. To elucidate the intrinsic protective
mechanism of Nanoparticles, I had utilized the computational biology techniques to evaluate the
thermos dynamic or binding/loading capacity of nanoparticles towards xenobiotics. During my
Ph.D. I published two research articles related to my Ph.D. work in PLoS One and Biotechnology
and Applied Biochemistry Journals. While doing my Ph.D., I was supported and funded by Indian
Council of Medical Research (ICMR) as a “Senior Research Followship” and “Research
Associateship” awards. At Integral University I served as a Vice President followed by President
in Alumni Association, year 2014-15. My previous corporate employers were GlaxoSmithKline,
Genova Bio-pharmaceuticals, and Aureate healthcare, where I was responsible for the medical
communication and sales for my company’s portfolio like nephrology and oncology. My first
teaching job was with Amity University Lucknow, where I was accountable for the monitoring of
research activities and teaching pharmacy students. Here I received international travel grant award
from, “International Particle Toxicology Conference”, Singapore, Sep 2016, to present my work
at this conference. During my assistant professor job at Swami Rama Himalayan University, my
role included, founding faculty member of School of Biosciences, core committee member of
research committee, member secretary of IPR cell, internal member of examination committee for
Ph.D., M.Sc., and B.Sc. students. Here, I arranged and facilitated the MoU between Rostock
University, Germany, and Swami Rama Himalayan University in the field of Systems Biology.
With the support of Rostock University, I successfully supervised one Ph.D. on the topic of
systems biology as Ph.D. supervisor. During my tenure at Swami Rama Himalayan University, I also organized “3rd International Conference on Nutraceuticals and Chronic Diseases” as a joint
organizing secretary. During my research journey in India, I dealt with several research problems
like environmental carcinogenesis, toxicology, development of drugs vaccine designing and
systems biology. In August 2019, I joined ‘University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’ as an assistant
scientist at the department of ‘Immunology and Microbiology’. My current research focus is
development of early detection biomarkers for pancreatic and GI cancers using Integrative biology
techniques. Here, I am using systems biology, molecular biology, transcriptomic analysis, big data
analysis, in vitro and in vivo techniques to boost my research hypothesis. My core expertise is in
bioinformatics, cell culture, molecular biology, confocal microscopy, and generation and handling
of animal models. In my last 4 years of service with University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, I have
published 26 research and review articles using systems and integrative biology in peer reviewed
and reputed journals like, Journal of Advanced Research, Scientific Reports, Seminar in Cancer
Biology, Apoptosis etc. many more articles are under process. I am committed to pursue my
research in systems and integrative biology. Systems biology is the combination of computational
and mathematical analysis and modeling of complex biological network systems. It is a biologybased interdisciplinary field of study that focuses on complex interactions within biological
systems, using a holistic approach (holism instead of the more traditional reductionism) to
biological research. The system biology approach also states that, a single gene or protein cannot
work in the isolation. Fluctuation in expression of any particular protein/gene mediates sweeping
change in entire gene/protein circuit. As per my all-research expertise, I have published more than
50 research and review articles and around 10 book chapters. Currently, I am also serving as a
section editor of, ‘Archives of Medical Sciences’. I am a potential reviewer of several peer
reviewed journals.
At last, but not the least, I would like to thank the entire team of ‘Asia Research Awards’ for
acknowledging and honoring me for my research work
